She is really nice to Ellen, her best friend, but gets a little annoyed with her sister Kristi. Ellen is Annemarie's best friend. Ellen is a shorter brown haired girl. She is very kind to Annemarie's little sister Kristi too, because Ellen is a only child.
2. What is the De Frie Danske? Why does Mrs. Johansen believe the soldiers stopped the girls in the street? The De Frie Danske is an illegal Resistance newspaper. It tells about the things the Resistance workers do to disrupt the Nazi factories and railroads they travel on.
Mrs. Johansen believes the girls stopped them to see if they were any of the people on the list at the synagogue. Now that they know that the Rosens are the Johansens' friends. So then if they ever found out that one of the two families were jewish or something they would then know that they could go to the other family to find out if one of the people in that family were hiding there.
3. What does Annemarie understand about the Resistance? What can the reader infer about Peter Neilsen from the information about him in this chapter? Annemarie understands that the resistance tries to kind of 'sabotage' the Nazi factories and the railroads that carry German weapons. You can tell that Peter Neilsen was married to Lise Johansen, but after Lise's death he still keeps a close relationship with the Johansens. I personally think that Peter Neilsen is part of the Resistance.
4. Why do you suppose Mrs. Rosen cautions the children to “be one of the crowd, always.” Be one of the many. Be sure that they never have reason to remember your face”? Because then If the Nazis know who you are you could be recognized. Then if they knew that you could know someone they want to take away they could come and question you about those people and maybe even take you away for hiding or knowing where the person is but not telling.

Peter has gotten a little more sad since Lise's death. He does not come to the Johansens as much, but his rare visists became very suspicious. The Nazis also can insult any of the Denmark people because they know that the Danish people can not fight back. 2. Why is Mama “troubled” when Annemarie tells her the button shop is closed? Mama is troubled because the button shop was ran by Jewish Danish. The Rosens are Jewish so Mama thinks that the Nazis might take away the Rosens if they found out that they were Jewish.

She usually does know though. When Annemarie gets there, instead of walking through the town they walk down a country path. No one seems to be on this path. This is a little strange to Annemarie.

1.Most of the day Annemarie and Ellen happily play until Uncle Henrik returns to the house. What two statements does he make that worry or puzzle Annemarie? I think the title fits well with the book and its meaning. Number the stars is like number these people. Count them and protect them always. Good!

1. What is in the casket?
There are clothes in the casket that will keep the Jewish people warm at night.
2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
Because Peter gave the baby the medicine it put the baby to sleep. This way the soldiers won't hear crying and suspect Uncle Henrik is helping Jewish people get to Sweden. 3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
Annemarie does not know that there really is no Great Aunt Birte. With this she does know that Uncle Henrik is going to transport the Jews to Sweden. I think that Annemarie will meet soldiers on the way. The soldiers have to guard the paths to make sure that know one is transporting Jews to Sweden. 2. What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?
Annemarie notices that it will take about an hour and a half for her mother to get back to safety. 3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety?
Her mother knows the paths through the woods and she would probably be able to go in the dark. So when she doesn't come back she worries if her mother was caught by the German soldiers.

Pictures Of Frankfurt
Frankfurt was beginning to be different when WWII started. Jews were looked down upon by some people. Some of Daniel's friends were Jewish, like him, were taken out of the public school. Daniel is not taken out of his school (the public one) yet, with his younger sister Erika. His teacher is obviously a Adolf Hitler person. He is really rude to Daniel and soon his nonjewish friend is ignoring him and pitching fights. This aggravates Daniel so much but he doesn't give up. But, after his mean teacher insults him he can't take it any longer. Daniel goes to a Jewish school then with his sister, Erika. Soon, things get worse. They have started banning Jews from pools and parks. Daniel and his family then get the terrible news that they are being 'relocated'!!
Pictures Of Lodz
They are taken to Lodz, Poland on a crowded train but it was okay. They get to a ghetto and see how bad it really is now. They are forced to live in little apartments that have no heating. The apartments also hold another guest, lice. Lice spread the deadly disease of Typhus. People are dying of hunger on the streets, and Daniel is getting used to the thought of him being killed. They are given small rations of a quarter loaf of bread and some soup with little noodles, vegetables and meat. Soon Daniel meets a girl that he falls in love with. Her name is Rosa. Erika and Daniel join this group of Resistance jews. Soon, all of Daniel's relatives (not mom, dad, or his sister) die except for his cousin Fredrick. When the news of going to a even worse place comes Jews flee and hide in the ghetto. Daniel and his family (not including Fredrick) are relocated to a concentration camp.
Pictures Of Auschwitz
Auschwitz is a terrible concentration camp. They are taken there in a cart pulled by a train, crowded with Jews. Some people die it is so cramped. The strong men and women are in one line and then the older people and the children in the other. The children and the elderly are being taken to be killed. The survivors' heads were shaved and they were given tatoos that were numbers. Daniel's whole family is there and then his mother is killed. The dad thinks that both Erika and mother were sent to the gas chambers and killed. But Erika is still alive. They are given small rations and many are killed. The gas chambers are known also as the "showers". Soon Daniel is sent on an important mission to take pictures of the chambers so that the resistance can bomb it. When they do the Jews are relocated along with Daniel and his father.

Buchenwald was where the political people were sent. It was a concentration camp. Daniel took pictures with a man named Karl. Karl and him take pictures of the SS and their families. One day Karl and Daniel are going to shoot the SS guards so that the people of the camp can take over. Daniel and his dad shoot the guards. The dad is shot in the arm and Daniel takes the lead. He shoots many guards and then the Americans come. The Americans rescue them.
